“So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem … And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them” (Luke 24:33-35)
A few days after the crucifixion of Jesus, two of His disciples were travelling to a small village seven miles from Jerusalem. As they went, they discussed the amazing events surrounding His death. They were joined by a stranger who asked, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?" They told Him how their Lord had been crucified, and now some women who went to the tomb to care for His body, were told by angels He’s alive (Luke 24:15-24).
Then, an amazing thing happened. The stranger explained from Scripture why their Lord had to suffer and die. The disciples knew they needed to tell these things to Peter and the others back in Jerusalem.
When they reached the village, and sat down to eat, they were amazed again. When the stranger blessed the bread, their eyes were opened, and they knew it was Jesus. Their weariness forgotten, they started back to Jerusalem to tell the Good News to the Church. They had precious information to share! When they got there, the disciples were already talking about more appearances of Christ.
This evening, let their example impress us deeply. They were so excited, they forgot their feet and walked seven miles in the dark! They gossiped the Gospel as much as they preached it! We must also “gossip” what God’s done for us. We each have our own intimate details of how Christ set us free from a particular addiction or sin that dogged us all our lives. Testimonies are the way the Body of Christ increases and is edified.
